Planning commission gives Wakarusa Ridge the OK

Editor's note: This was one of several stories focusing on Eudora's growth. The Eudora City Council later OK'd the building of Wakarusa Ridge Estates.
The passing of the final development plan by the planning and zoning commission leaves the beginning phases for Wakarusa Ridge Estates a city council approval away.
Last week, the commission approved the final plan for the development, west of Winchester road and north of K-10, with the recommendation by commission chairman Kurt von Achen that its east drainage basin be built during Wakarusa's phase one development.
The plan was tabled at the commission's May 3 meeting to address and improve drainage plans, said city engineer Matt Taylor.
A change in zoning for the annexed land was unanimously accepted by the city council at its April 24 meeting, changing from agriculture to single-family residential. After reviewing the plan, Taylor said it was up to standard by utilizing existing ponds to control run-off drainage.
"They've expanded on the drainage study quite a bit," Taylor said. "As submitted, the remaining drainage areas are less than what the existing is. If the ponds stay, I think we're looking real good."
Lance Johnson, engineer for the Peridian Group, Lawrence, said the company worked hard to ensure the drainage requirements were met with the new plan, allowing it to be approved by the commission.
"We've done quite a bit of work over the last month working with that," Johnson said.
The plan was approved with a unanimous vote from the commission. Members Rod Moyer and Rose House were not present.
