Melvin A. Morriss Sr.
1925-2001
Graveside services for Melvin Allen Morriss Sr., 75, Eudora, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Eudora Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Morriss died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 9, 1925, in Lecompton, the son of Allen Ray and Effie Mary Morriss. He moved to Eudora in 1937.
Mr. Morriss had worked in the Eudora area for the Santa Fe Railroad, Sunflower Ammunition Plant and Hamm Quarries, and operated the Skelly and Standard Service Station. He retired in 1978.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Shamrock Bay in the Pacific Ocean from 1943-1946.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post No. 852 in Lawrence for many years.
He married Clarice Evelyn Bartley on Jan. 6, 1948, in Marysville. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Melvin Morriss Jr., Eudora, and Richard Morriss, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Gina Tompkins, Lone Jack, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
Two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice Care in Douglas County, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence.
