Hickman has the hot bat
After feasting on Wellsville pitching, people were asking senior right fielder Betsy Hickman what she had eaten earlier that day.
"Everyone was asking me what I had for lunch," Betsy laughed. "The last hit I had, I was so scared she (the left fielder) was going to catch it, but the wind caught it and it didn't go that far."
It went far enough for a double, Betsy's fourth of the day, to plate the winning run in the ninth frame. In the fifth inning, she tagged the first pitch to the fence in left so the Eagle defender was well advised to play back.
"I wish that one had gone over the fence instead of hitting the bottom of it. I've played against those girls forever and the pitcher had a tempo I liked," she said.
And then some. Hickman went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader last Thursday with seven runs batted in. She provided both RBIs in Eudora's 3-2 loss in the opener and added three doubles and a single for five more in the 9-8 victory.
In earlier doubleheaders, Betsy got to play the first game but sat out the second, while first-year coach Cara Kimberlin searched for the right combination of players for Cardinal success.
"I wanted to prove to Coach and told myself I was going to hit the ball," Hickman said.
Her determination showed and lifted Eudora to its second win of the season.
By the way, Betsy had a turkey sandwich, pickle and a root beer for lunch that day.
