Eudora residents will go to the polls Tuesday to narrow the list of school board candidates from seven to six.

If history tells us anything, we can expect voter turnout to be low.

Given the significance of this year's primary, however, we hope every registered voter in Eudora will show up Tuesday.

The Eudora School District is about to begin what may be the most important four years in its history.

As residential growth continues in Eudora, school board members will be faced with some serious issues. The current board is considering a bond issue that would shape the school district's future for years to come. School board members elected in April will continue that work.

An overly aggressive approach to the problems of school overcrowding and aging facilities could result in the failure of a bond. A passive approach, on the other hand, could leave the district ill-prepared to deal with the ever-growing student population.

Each candidate has his or her own vision for the Eudora School District. The candidates are all uniquely qualified to fill the positions and each has been candid and shared ideas openly.

In this week's issue of The Eudora News, you will find profiles of all the school board candidates and their ideas on dealing with the district's rapid growth.

They've done their parts; now it's time for the voters to do theirs.

Residents have a responsibility not only to vote but also to be informed. In many ways, those we elect on a local level have more of an impact on our daily lives than those we elect nationally or on a state level.

We urge all of Eudora's registered voters to take a little time, look into the issues and choose the candidates they think will lead Eudora schools in the direction they want it to go.

It's been said before, but it bears repeating: if you don't vote now, you don't have the right to complain later.
