Memorial services for Melvin Earl Ray, 72, Topeka, were Monday, May 14, at Parker-Price Chapel, Topeka. Private inurnment is planned.
Mr. Ray died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at his home.
He was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Lawrence, the son of Benjamin Harrison and Margaret Jane (Hartman) Ray.
He moved to Topeka from Lawrence in 1960.
Mr. Ray served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married Lucille K. Houk Sept. 25, 1952, in Leavenworth. She died Sept. 1, 1985.
Survivors include a companion, Saudra Ray, of the home; two sons, Daniel E. Ray and Thomas M. Ray, both of Topeka; four daughters, Vickie Jo Hildebrand, Eudora, Norma J. VanCleave, Dover, and Judy K. Ray and Christina M. Ray, both of Topeka; three brothers, Wilbur Ray and Howard Ray, both of Lawrence, and Alfred Ray, Topeka; a sister, Hazel Coffman, Ottawa; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society, 1315 S.W. Arrowhead Road, Topeka 66604.
