November 1937
Herbert Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Brown, was taken for a wild ride at the point of a revolver that ended at Carleton, about 18 miles southwest of Abilene.
Brown picked up two men shortly after midnight at the Willard cut on Highway 40 west of Lawrence. They asked to ride into town. As they approached the business district, one of the men displayed a gun and ordered him to drive across the Kaw River bridge. Near Midland, they ordered him into the back seat of his car, a 1936 Chevrolet sedan, and blindfolded him. He wasn't allowed to see until they were approximately 25 miles west of Topeka. There the blindfold was taken off and he was ordered to drive. He held the wheel until they reached Junction City, where he was blindfolded again and one of the two kidnappers took the wheel and drove through Abilene and then to a point near Carlton, southwest of Abilene.
The two men held Brown there until another car stopped. The men quarreled for a short time, then took $4 from Brown's billfold, blindfolded him and told him not to move until they had time to get out of sight. He then returned home.
