Resilient girls continue streak
December 27, 2007
There have been plenty of impressive moments through the girls cross country team’s five consecutive trips to the Class 4A state meet. With all due respect to the team’s fourth-place finish in 2005 and it’s medalists in 2004 and 2006 and aside perhaps only Brittney Graff’s individual championship two years ago, the team finding a way to qualify in 2007 might rank as the most impressive.
Surely it was one of the most unexpected, at least through the googles with which the team stared during the summer.
Absent team-mainstay Graff and initially starting the season with the multi-talented Emily Ballock, the squad boasted just one senior and few runners with big-meet experience.
Ballock unexpectedly joined the team right before the first meet, however, and — aided by the veteran core of Lauren Colman, Liz Hoese and Bre Miller and emerging freshman talent Kaya Riemann— the team did the improbable. It stretched it’s consecutive state trips streak one more season.
The team was third at the regionals race in Ottawa, then was 10th at state. Ballock brought home her first state cross country medal, finishing 17th.
