Wrestlers roll at regional

Eudora wrestling coach Bill DeWitt is no doctor, but last spring he diagnosed his team with “Jayhawk-basketball syndrome.” It was a way for the coach to explain his team’s repeated frustrations at the state wrestling tournament.
It did little to sum up the team’s season, however. The wrestling squad only won three matches at the state tournament, but it sent five wrestlers after a strong showing at regionals.
Richard Wilks, 285 pounds, placed fourth; 160-pound wrestler Jake Love came in at third place; Travis Clarke placed second at 130 pounds; Tim Durkin, 215 pounds, also placed second; and for his second consecutive week, Evan Meyers took the championship in the 189-pound class, winning via pin in every match.
“Everybody wrestled their behinds off,” DeWitt said in February. “I was as proud of my team as I’ve ever been.”
Meyers went on to win his first round at state and Clarke and Durkin each won one match on the back-side of the bracket, helping add a little cheer to a disappointing showing.
