- With less than two weeks left until the county’s Jan. 23 filing deadline, pickings for both the USD 491 Board of Education and Eudora City Council are slim. As of Wednesday morning, only two applicants –- current boardmember Greg Neis and newcomer Michael Kelso –- have filed to run for the four open seats on the board. No one has filed yet for the three open city council seats.

She graduated from Eudora High School in 1996 and from Washburn University in 2002. She is a critical care nurse at Providence Medical Center.

- Sydney Marie Owens Ryan and Jeanette Owens, Eudora, announce the birth of a daughter, Sydney Marie Owens, on Monday, July 31, 2006, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Sydney weighed 8 pounds 11-1/2 ounces and was 20 inches long. She has a sister, Haley, 2.

- The names of more than 1,500 candidates for degrees in the fall 2006 semester at Kansas University have been announced by the registrar’s office. Graduate and undergraduate degrees are conferred in December based on work completed during the fall semester. Many graduating in the fall and summer terms return for commencement exercises May 20.

- Troop 64, Boy Scouts of America, had its Court of Honor Dec. 18 at Salem Chapel, the troop’s meeting place for 31 years. Nathan Gentleman and Lyle Howell each earned the rank of Life Scout. Alex Whitten received Star Scout rank. Connor Bradley, Nathan Bradley, Devon Middleton and Andrew Briery were awarded Tenderfoot rank and Brandon Wheelock earned Scout rank. Michael Whitten was recognized for recently earning Eagle rank.

- 7 years ago FROM THE EUDORA NEWS January 2000 State Rep. Phill Kline and Sen. Sam Brownback were guest speakers at the Eudora Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and dinner. Kaw Valley Bank president James Hoover was named the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year. He was mayor of Eudora for 22 years and served 10 years as a city councilman. He was not able to attend the meeting. Mary Kay Gregory, a 25-year employee of Kaw Valley Bank, accepted the award on Hoover’s behalf.

- In honor of the city’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2007, the Eudora Lions Club and City of Eudora are raising funds for a bronze statue of Chief Paschal Fish and his daughter, Eudora, the community’s namesake. The statue will be placed in the CPA Park in downtown Eudora.

- It became obvious two years ago during the controversy over Bobby Arnold’s retention as Eudora Parks and Recreation Director that many residents of the city have direct emotional ties with the department he headed. It would be fair to speculate that the closest personal connections many residents of Eudora have with the city is with the recreation department. That is especially true of those young families who have moved to Eudora in great numbers in the past decade.

- One of my New Year’s resolutions is to read one newspaper each day and since our own Eudora News is a weekly, I find myself trying to keep up by reading the Lawrence Journal-World. I have tried to do this in the past, but my husband has a maddening habit of turning all of the pages inside out for easier reading and sometimes it’s just too much work to but the darned thing back together. Nevertheless, I feel I have almost come to know some of the contributors to LJW, and so I’ve decided to bring some of those bits and pieces to this column this week.

- Surrounded by his friends and family Sunday afternoon, 18-year-old Joe White couldn’t hide his smile. He peered down at his cards and tossed his chips down on the dining room table. After the dealer laid three more cards on the table, White’s smile beamed brighter. The poker game could have happened during any of his visits back to Eudora from his father’s home in Topeka. White left Eudora when he was in the sixth grade to live with his father, however he maintained contact with his Eudora friends

- Overtime finally a treat for Eudora boys team

- The Eudora boys basketball team knows how to play close games, and Tuesday they showed they may be learning how to win them. After losing Friday to De Soto in two overtimes 65-62, the team squared off against Central Heights at home. Though the game also went into overtime, Eudora emerged with an entirely different result, pulling ahead in the extra four minutes for a 44-34 victory.

- Even with a difficult weekend schedule, the Eudora wrestling team managed to end two events near the top, despite acquiring some bruises along the way. Eudora took two of three duals at its Jan. 4 senior night quadrangular, then was edged into second place at a weekend tournament. Neither perfect, but both rife with highlights, Eudora coach Bill Dewitt said.
