- For Eudora's top two pole vaulters, flying high and scoring big at track meets isn't just a field event. It's a family occasion. Senior Austin Hoover and his sister, sophomore Allison, have come up big for the Cardinals, and they say it wouldn't be possible without the support of one another, or the constant cheering their parents provide meet in and meet out.

- When the names were called out Thursday, attendees at the Eudora USD 491 Board of Education meeting learned Susan Schiffelbein and Matt Bova accomplished something special. Each was singled out as the district's nominees for the 2008 Kansas Teacher of Year award. Bova earned the nod for the secondary grade levels. He teaches English and photojournalism at Eudora High School. Schiffelbein earned the honor for the primary grades. She teaches writing to students at Eudora West Elementary School.

- Eudora residents could soon have a new banking option close to Kansas Highway 10 if a proposed development goes through. James Hoover, owner of Kaw Valley State Bank, and his son, Jimmy, completed the first step in the development process May 2 at the regular meeting of the Eudora Planning Commission.

- The time has returned to fight fire with a fair. After a one-year hiatus, the Eudora Township Fire Department will bring back its safety fair. Members of the Eudora Township Fire Department and other public safety organizations will band together from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to help make Eudora a safer place. The free event will be at the township fire station, 310 East 20th St.

- The Eudora USD 491 Board of Education accepted the final form of a $45 million bond package Thursday. “We've got to go. This is where we're at,” Superintendent Marty Kobza said.

- Steve Strecker, who owns the McDonalds in Pratt was sweeping up and his wife, Jolan, cleaning tables. The customers next to my booth suddenly became quiet. I had just come from Greensburg, walking around the rubble and taking an aerial tour with our Kansas National Guard General Todd Bunting. Our group included Congressmen Jerry Moran, who represents Greensburg and Todd Tiahrt, his wife, Vicki, and our staffs.
