As he bunkered up with the other volunteers in the Eudora City Fire Department, he put on the white helmet. It meant he was in charge. He had to coordinate the firefighters in waves to make sure they were safe and rested. He was responsible for finding enough water to keep the fire attack tight.

- Time to plan for Church Street improvements
- May 17, 2007

The discussion only underscores the obvious: Church Street south of 13th — which remains the same narrow two-lane roadway without curbs, guttering, shoulders or turn lanes as it was before businesses and subdivisions sprung up to its east — is overdue for a major upgrade.
