- Feds approve wetlands Lawrence trafficway route

- A route through the Baker Wetlands is the best option to complete the controversial South Lawrence Trafficway, key federal regulators said Tuesday. Regulators with the Federal Highway Administration began distributing a long-awaited report Tuesday determining that a 32nd Street route for the trafficway is the only feasible and prudent alternative that would allow for completion of the bypass project.

- A student at Eudora High School student has been diagnosed with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, which is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. According to school district officials, the student was not infected at school, but the district still sent a letter home with students to let parents know that preventative measures were being taken and “the school has undergone a complete disinfection process.”

- Not to be lost in the shuffle of the $45 million school bond question, Charter Ordinance No. 10 also was approved by a measure of 602-542. The ordinance allows the mayor — upon approval of the city council — to appoint department heads for two years instead of one year.

- After months of forums, pamphlets and discussion, voters in Eudora USD 491 approved the $45 million school bond, 874 to 722. Turnout in the referendum was 34.4 percent with 1,596 of 4,649 registered voters in school district casting ballots in the referendum.

- I went for a bike ride Sunday. It was a beautiful day in the 70s, so I took advantage of what may be the last of our lingering warm autumn days. Since I was gone for two weeks and then had the flu for a couple of weeks, I haven't felt much like doing anything except spending time on the couch with a book or watching Ellen or Oprah. It felt good to stretch my legs and my lungs and take in the vanishing beauty of the season.
