Rec center to open Tuesday
The indoor portion of the $3.8 million Eudora Community and Aquatics Center will be open to the public Tuesday for limited use.
Eudora Parks and Recreation Director Tammy Hodges said the community room, kitchen and fitness center at the new recreation center at 1628 Elm St. will be available on that date.
Hodges said that the community room already has 10 bookings for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The city's new facility will feature a community room and kitchen with a capacity for 150 people and can be rented with the kitchen for $150 per day or for $125 a day without the kitchen.
The new fitness center has three treadmills, three elliptical machines, one recumbent bike, one upright bike, six universal weight machines, dumbbells, weight benches and three plasma screen televisions.
Fitness center memberships for USD 491 residents are $25 a month for a single adult, $20 a month for a single student, $15 a month for a single senior (55 and over) and $35 a month for a family. Non-resident prices are $10 more for single adults and families and $5 more for students and seniors.
The bathrooms are outfitted with 60 lockers, three showers and baby changing station.
The only part of the center that will not be ready on Tuesday is the gymnasium, which will be ready the week of Thanksgiving, just in time for youth basketball teams to begin practicing in December.
Hodges also said that her department planned to have men's and women's volleyball leagues, men's basketball and tournaments for dodgeball and kickball.
"Since we have a building now, we're trying to bring in new stuff."
Grand opening and ribbon-cutting festivities, which include Santa and drawings for prizes, will take place at 4 p.m. Dec. 2.
Hours for the new recreation center are 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. However, after the first of year, more hours will be dedicated to Saturday and the center will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
