Culinary arts students’ cake contest results
Signs of Eudora," a three-tiered yellow, chocolate and white cake decorated with fondant signs from around Eudora today won the commemorative cake auction Friday night.
Kelsie Riser, Dustin True and Britney Samuels created the winning entry.
Students from the Eudora-De Soto Technical Education Centers' culinary arts program created six themed cakes for the city's recent 150th Birthday Party. A silent auction for the confections netted $136 that went back to the program.
The second-place winner was red velvet covered by white fondant with a hand drawing of the Paschal and Eudora Fish statue made by Derek Scrimsher. Third went to Carl Austin Abram and Nathan Gammon for a re-creation of Laws Field complete with goal posts and football players.
Jim Thoennes created a cheesecake with a Power E on top to represent the strength and fortitude of the community.
Clinton Smith, Felissa Estrada and Alex Curran teamed up to make the tallest entry which was a depiction of the water tower and pond on the east side of town. A clever use of "Puppy Chow" covered the exterior of a four-layer cake in the shape of the 1856 Rock School House. It was made by Justin Garcia and Chris Wise.
Judges were Lori Fritzel, Kathy Correll and Bryan Chumbley.
Auction winners were Johnny Stewart, who won two cakes, Bonnie Neis, Cindy Higgins, Mary Beth Steinlage and Dodie Ortega and Rachel Kaslaitis.
"We learned a lot about making cakes," culinary arts instructor Jason Gray said. "We did a practice run, then started over. The kids were extremely excited, worked hard and took pride of ownership. We appreciated the opportunity to work with the city and community."
