Mass of Christian burial for Charlotte L. Altenbernd, 83, Lawrence, was Monday, Oct. 22, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Mrs. Altenbernd died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at her home.
She was born Feb. 8, 1924, the daughter of William "Will" and Anita Greiner Stadler. She graduated from Eudora High School and attended Kansas University.
Mrs. Altenbernd was a homemaker and worked at the Lawrence Journal-World. She was also a teaching paraprofessional at Lawrence High School for 15 years before she retired.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society, an Extension Homemakers Unit and the Phoenix Club. She enjoyed cooking and represented the state of Kansas at several national cooking contests in the 1980s and 1990s.
She married Homer C. Altenbernd on Nov. 9, 1946, in Lawrence. He died Feb. 18, 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Becky Penner, Longview, Wash., and Lisa Altenbernd, Evanston, Ill.; two sons, Mike Altenbernd, Kansas City, Kan., and Bart Altenbernd, Overland Park; a sister, Virginia Senogles, Topeka; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Bill Stadler and Pete Stadler.
The family suggests memorials to St. John the Evangelist Catholic School, Ballard Community Services or Harvesters Community Food Network, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence 66044.
