Two nights after prom, members of the Eudora track team may have felt sluggish but it sure didn’t show.

In the 33rd annual Cardinal Relays, the girls team finished first at its home meet by beating second-place finisher Tonganoxie by 13 team points. The boys didn’t fare too much worse. They took second place, 31 points behind De Soto.

Prom or no prom, after being off for over two weeks — since the Riley County meet — coach Phil Katzenmeier was glad to be back in action.

“We really needed to get back on a track, have a nice day and get some good performances,” he said.

All three of those things occurred.

The weather hovered around 65 degrees for most of the evening, which Katzenmeier said helped both spectators and all teams involved.

For the Eudora girls, the 100-meter dash set the tone for the day. Alisha Wingebach won the event in 12.9 seconds, while Rachel Pyle and Tianna Dunnaway came in third and fourth, respectively.

“Coming into today, I knew I was still tired from prom. But it’s really good weather and we had a tailwind so I knew that I had to kick it out,” Wingebach said. “Knowing that I was running with all my teammates it helped out. I want my teammates to do good, just as much as I want myself to do good.”

One of those teammates, Emily Ballock, took first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.9 seconds, and the high hurdles with a time of 15.6 seconds.

The Cardinals also took first in the 4-by-800 relay, the 4-by-400 and the 4-by-100.

After placing second in the long jump, Kendal Abel, in her first throwing event of her career, placed second in the javelin with a heave of 109 feet, 2 inches.

“We saw her throwing an apple or something one day, and it looked like she had a pretty live arm, so we worked with her a little bit on the javelin and she threw well,” Katzenmeier said.

The boys team was led by Justin Ballock. Ballock won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.5 seconds, and the high hurdles in 15.6. The 4-by-400 boys relay team, like the girls, took first, in 45.7 seconds.

Jordan Katzfey (triple jump), Ivan Espinosa (3200), Mike White (100) and Caleb Clayton-Molby (high hurdles) all placed second in their events. Eudora will travel to De Soto’s meet Friday.
