Off to a good start

Zane Pittman tosses up the opening tip for Calvin Smoot and a De Soto player Saturday in a youth basketball game between the Eudora Silver Bullets and the De Soto Warriors. The youth basketball league at the Eudora Community Center kicked off its season Saturday with seven games in the community center gym and four games at Eudora Middle School.

The ball rested on the rim for what seemed like an eternity. Eudora junior Haley Epperson turned her back on the basket, seemingly convinced her last-second shot was not going to fall and Eudora would drop a hard-fought game Tuesday at Silver Lake.

Open weight classes continued to haunt the Cardinals wrestling squad over the weekend, but again Eudora got good showings out of seniors Travis Clarke, Evan Meyers and Jake Love to take seventh place as a team at the Bonner Springs Tournament.

Eudora High School English teacher Heather Lawrence loves to learn. She reads as much as possible and is in the midst of pursuing a Master’s degree in liberal arts from Baker University. But learning is not what she loves the most.
Housing market sluggish in 2007

At a Eudora Planning Commission meeting Wednesday, the city of Eudora reported just nine single-family building permits were issued for 2007, down from 25 in 2006. Building permits for single-family homes have declined since 2003, when 117 permits were issued, followed by 108 permits in 2004 and 96 permits in 2005.

When it came time to talk of his football accomplishments, namely recognition as one of Kansas’ top high school football players with his selection to the 2008 Kansas Shrine Bowl team, Eudora senior Morgan Abel mentioned something that most high school students don’t have the presence of mind to consider.

The eight-grade varsity basketball season got off to a 1-1 start Saturday in Wellsville.
Seventh-grade basketball

The seventh-grade varsity boys basketball team opened the season with a two-game tournament at Wellsville Saturday. Eudora and Wellsville matched up in the first game, for what turned out to be a real nail-biter — a 29-28 double-overtime victory by the Cardinals.

Both the varsity and the junior varsity wrestling squads will travel to Lansing Jan. 16 for a triangular against Lansing and Basehor.
