First day of state meet produces multiple finalists
May 23, 2008
One might say things went as expected at the Kansas 2008 State Track Meet Friday in Wichita.
Save, seemingly, the most certain of anticipated outcomes.
Emily Ballock qualified for the finals in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and the 400 relay team did the same.
A three-time state champion in the 300 hurdles, Ballock was edged out in the preliminaries in the event by Chapman freshman Jill Kurtz, who finished in 45.57 seconds to Ballock's 45.58.
The Eudora senior also qualified for Saturday's competition in the 100 hurdles, finishing seventh in 15.61. The top time in that event was 14.73.
Other results on the day include Kendal Abel placing 12th in the long jump - with a leap of 16 feet, 2 inches - and Justin Ballock's 11th place finish in the 100 high hurdles. Ballock finished in 15.57, while the slowest qualifying time was 15.34.
The 400 relay team of Abel, Alisha Wingebach, Tianna Dunnaway and Rachel Pyle qualified for Saturday by finishing in 51.06. The top time in that event was 49.74.
Action in 4A resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday. For results after the conclusion of the meet, check www.eudoranews.com.
