- Third Degree Bern
- May 1, 2008
- It involves deception, cunning, speed, timing, intimidation and about 90 feet of dirt. Stealing a base is just that simple, and it’s just that hard.
- Fill hole in heart with pets
- May 1, 2008
- About a month ago, Rodney, a client and a close friend, suggested I invest some reading time with Mark Levins “Rescuing Sprite.” Rodney knew I was an avid reader of novels and it seemed he was also. I had a few opportunities to purchase it in a bookstore in Lawrence, but for some reason I just passed it up. Last week, Rodney stopped in for dog food and left his copy of this wonderful short story. I took the hint, and after my current novel was finished I picked up “Rescuing Sprite” and dove in.

- Constant chase for campaign cash self defeating
- April 17, 2008
- It’s the political season. Even at a newsroom as small as ours that means lots of faxs and e-mails from office seekers and interest groups. Those emails rarely provide a candidate’s clearly defined opinion on issues but are often more than happy to provide misleading takes on an opponents’ views.

- Work to attain scholarships pays
- April 3, 2008
- I am the first of my entire family to attend a four year university and to tell the truth I don't know why it's such a big deal. Now, do not get the idea college is anything like high school because it's not, you have to work at everything you do. I'm not telling you this to try and scare you off but just know that college professors expect a lot more out of you than the high school teachers.
- Leadership needed to end energy impasse
- April 3, 2008
- In the 2006 Kansas House elections and in the months preceding the start of the legislative session in January, there was ambitious talk of developing a new energy policy for the state. Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Roderick Bremby‘s denial last October of permits to build two coal-fired electrical plants near Holcomb seems to have put an end to far-reaching action on energy policy. Instead, the session has become a contest between Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and a Republican dominated Legislature over the fate of the coal-fired plants.

- Starlight provides memorial
- March 27, 2008
- Scientist told us that the light from an exploding star 40 times the size of the sun briefly appeared in the night sky last week. For a few hours, it could be spotted shinning in the sky as brightly as the stars in Orion’s belt although few of us would have noticed the star’s unexpected and sudden appearance. What made the event so remarkable was that the star was in a galaxy 8.5 billion light years away, a distance half the estimated size of the universe. Light from the galaxy is so faint, the astronomers were previously unaware of its existence.
